Spring Snowpack — High Pass Closures
Togwotee Pass, Beartooth Hwy, and Bighorn passes (Powder River, Burgess Junction) can remain closed through mid-June. Check WYDOT before any high-country drive. Late June is the reliable window for full access.

Spring Runoff — River Levels Peak
May–June brings peak flows on the Snake River, Gros Ventre, Wind River, and Bighorn River fork systems. High flows affect whitewater and fishing conditions. Check USGS gauges before float planning.
Frequently Asked Questions — Wyoming
PeakScout computes a Wyoming Go Score (0–100) updated hourly using weather (Open-Meteo), BTAC avalanche danger, road status (WYDOT), AQI (AirNow), and trail conditions (USFS/ArcGIS). Scores above 70 mean go; 40–69 caution; below 40 marginal. Lightning immediate alerts and active fire closures cap score at 0.
Teton Pass (WY-22, 8,428 ft) is a year-round route but is the most weather-sensitive pass in Wyoming. Minor closures happen during heavy snow, high wind, or avalanche control. WYDOT operates cameras on WY-22. Check the current status on our /wyoming/passes page, or visit wyoroad.info for live WYDOT updates.
BTAC (Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center, jhavalanche.org) issues daily avalanche forecasts for the Teton zone during snow season (typically November through May). Danger is rated 1–5 across four elevation bands. Check the BTAC danger mosaic on our /wyoming/avalanche page for the current rating and elevation-specific details.
PeakScout tracks NIFC active fire perimeters across Wyoming and polls AirNow AQI for Jackson, Cody, Sheridan, Lander, and Casper. AQI above 100 produces penalty in Go Score. Trails within 1 mile of an active fire perimeter see additional score reduction. Check /wyoming/smoke for current fire locations and regional AQI.
PeakScout covers 12 WY OHV areas including Continental Divide, Togwotee, Bighorn Mountains, and the Dubois area. Route conditions are updated via WYDOT, USFS road status, and MVUM overlays. Check /wyoming/ohv for the current status of WY trails and route-specific conditions.
Togwotee Pass (US-26/287, 9,654 ft) typically closes in late October–November and opens late April–mid-June depending on snowpack. At 9,654 ft, it often remains snow-covered well into June. WYDOT begins snow removal in April; the opening date varies significantly year to year.
The Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail (CDNST) runs through Wyoming via Togwotee Pass and the Bridger-Teton corridor. Groomed trail operations run December–March. Sno-Park permits required at designated trailheads. Check current trail status at /wyoming/ohv and WYDOT reports before planning a trip.
