New Mexico Outdoors

White Sands, Jemez Mountains, Gila Wilderness

The Land of Enchantment offers some of America's most diverse wilderness — gypsum dunes at White Sands, volcanic hot springs in the Jemez Mountains, ancient ponderosa forests of the Gila, and 12,000-ft Sangre de Cristo peaks above Santa Fe. Monsoon summer is wild; fall is golden and perfect.

Monsoon Season (Jul–Sep)
New Mexico's monsoon (late June–September) brings intense daily afternoon thunderstorms, especially over mountains. Flash floods are the #1 weather killer in NM. Dry arroyos fill in minutes. Do not camp in washes or canyon bottoms. Lightning kills hikers above treeline — descend by noon. Check wca.nmsu.edu daily.

Wildfire & Drought Season
May–July pre-monsoon is NM's peak wildfire risk. High winds + dry conditions + frequent lightning. Check NMDGF and USFS for fire restrictions before any backcountry camping. Fire bans may prohibit stoves as well as campfires.

Golden Fall Window (Sep–Nov)
September and October are NM's crown jewels — monsoon ends, aspens turn gold in the Jemez and Sangre de Cristos, cool temps, and elk bugling season. Wheeler Peak and Sandia Crest are at their best. Hunter orange recommended Sep 15–Nov 30.
