🟤 Understanding Colorado Mud Season

April–June is mud season at elevations above 8,500 ft. Snowmelt saturates soils, and riding on wet trails causes lasting ruts and damage that take years to recover. The rule: if your tires leave marks more than 1 inch deep, the trail is too wet to ride. Fruita and Horse Gulch (lower desert) typically drain fast and ride well during mud season when alpine trails are still thawing.

🚐 Shuttle Logistics

Point-to-point trails like Monarch Crest, Hermosa Creek, and Kokopelli require a vehicle shuttle. Crested Butte and Durango both have local outfitters offering shuttle services — search for "MTB shuttle [area name]" or ask at the local bike shop. Doctor Park requires a 1.5h car shuttle or coordination with a guide service.
